Day 1, Overview

A selection of frames made of cedar or maple will be brought for the group to choose from. Multiple sizes ranging from 12" for children to 18" will be available. Fully soaked elk or buffalo hides will be brought to allow you to cut your own drum head and stringing. Often rarer hides can be brought when on hand, such as caribou, bear or seal.  Each area of a hide has a particular quality- tougher, thicker, stretchy or weak. David will go over all the how's where's and why's with you. Once the holes are punched, the group will string the drums and set them to rest overnight.

Day 2, Overview

The group will complete and tighten the stringing until a proper tone is heard in the wet drum. The drum will be put to rest while we make the tom toms and cut buckskin to wrap the handles. With the tom-toms done, the drums will be checked for tone and stability (due to the hide moving and finding its own stretch pattern) and the handle will be laced in. Depending on humidity, the handle could be wrapped at the end of the day and woken by playing. The drum tone will change over the next week or so as the hide seasons and finds its most stable position on the frame.
